UG Cup - Return of 15s Rugby.

Pirates (Defending Champions 15s)

October 6 2018, sees the return of 15s rugby as the 20th edition of the Uganda Cup kicks off. Last year`s edition saw Pirates launch their clean sweep as they put aside Hima Heathens 21-30 in the final. However this year, they start their Cup defense by visiting Mbale Elephants. With this tremble looming over their heads, Pirates is faced with a new challenge, not of potential, but of consistency. Not much has been said about any new players, restructuring of team or change in administration however, that doesn't mean that they do not have a game plan for this upcoming season.

Ivan Magomu (Pirates Captain)

Ivan Magomu, showed up in the National 7s tournament whenever he was in town and played for his side showing strong sportsmanship and leadership skills. History has it, that Ivan is a complex player to understand or even support but Pirates has developed an environment for him to grow as a leader and team player that not even the national team has managed to do for him. It will interesting to see what trajectory the other youngsters in Pirates take in their careers because of the foundation Pirates is providing for them.

Last season the Pirates caught all other teams offside however this season they all seem alert. It will be interesting to see if and how the pirates continue to dominate in UG rugby. The fast approaching Uganda Cup is Pirates` chance to prove they did not catch the rest off-guard last year.  Its undeniable they were by far the best side last year but it was also hard to identify who would challenge them. KOBS had lost vital organs in the likes of Joseph Aredo and Ramathan Govule, a transition was on. Heathens faced similar problems from the departure of Asuman Mugerwa and Aaron Ofoyrwoth while Rhinos flatter to deceive. In a nutshell, Pirates were best placed to run things and did not slip up.

Hima Heathens

This season every team has their eye on taking Pirates down. Heathens just made a big coaching change and brought in a lot of manpower from Buffaloes. However that is the easy part. Let’s talk team bonding, team chemistry and on field execution. How will they work through this going into a season where the favorites have minimal changes made to their squad. KOBS has made big changes too. However their team structure is still pretty solid. Leadership is strong and direction is pretty determined for this season. Rhinos has been silent through this transition but from past performances, Rhinos always shows up and this season might be their time to upset not only Pirates, but also KOBS and Heathens.

Warriors has come back into this with a new coach, new sponsor and a number of new players. The general team dynamic is revolutionary and it will be interesting to see how this translates into execution on the field and results on the scoreboard. Mongers hosted USIU over the off season. Other than that, they also were relatively quiet but you can never underestimate the Entebbe based squad. Mongers put on some impressive performances last season and its safe to say that there will be a very big battle in the mid portion of the standings table this season. Buffaloes lost a lot of players to Heathens however they did add a few gentlemen to their squad. Buffaloes always gives every opponent they face, a run for their money and its always entertaining to see which team they will upset next. They have a lot of tricks up their sleeve. With most teams keeping an eye on Pirates, they might not see Buffaloes coming.

Lastly, there is the new team on the block, Walukuba Titans that replaced Impis that as relegated last season. Are they ready for the big league, only time will tell.

KOBS and Heathens have all boasted their roasters with new faces with Pirates as the common enemy. Pirates` treble was never good news to KOBS and Heathens and they would love to make amends. Whether the reinforcements made by the chasing pack were well calculated, the answer will unfold in the next ten months.  The Ivan Magomu led army is up for big season with a chance to silence doubters.

2017/8 Nile Rugby Premier 10 Preview for Week 15

Week 15 will hopefully provide more fireworks as teams jostle for any points to ensure they finish the competition very strongly. Pirates gleefully lead the pack as the Warriors are shockingly at the bottom of the log. All this can change very quickly and hence confirming that this year’s competition is the stiffest ever in our short rugby history.
Shell Rimula Rhinos host Toyota Buffaloes
On Friday the 3rd placed Shell Rimula Rhinos will host 6th placed Toyota Buffaloes at legends. The Rhinos will hopefully have recovered from last weekend’s celebrations after beating KOBS. The Buffaloes on the other hand came closest this season to beat Pirates on the pitch last weekend. The formidable Rhinos’ forwards will want to dominate possession while Buffaloes will want to give the backs lots of ball and space to operate.
Betway Kobs versus Plascon Mongers
This 2:30 kickoff at Legends will be a big test of nerves as both teams are eager to get maximum points. It could also turn out being the hardest game for the top sides in week 15. Mongers managed to put away a high flying Hippos in Jinja in style and will be hoping to continue from where they left off on the road.
KOBS vs. Mongers
The KOBS on the other hand are aware that they cannot afford more loses. They still have a mathematical chance to win the league. It will be interesting to see how they will try to balance the need to win and also plan for week 16 when they host their ‘old enemy’ Heathens.
Pirates host Warriors
The table leaders clash against the bottom placed warriors would normally not attract a lot of attention from most observers but not this time around. The Pirates last weekend looked very shaky against Buffaloes and were forced to dig much deeper in their arsenal to win the game. Things might not be so different this time around as the warriors are basically fighting for their survival in the Premier 10. The Pirates without 6 players who are in the Uganda Seven’s team looked so vulnerable last weekend and this could act as extra motivation for the Warriors.

Hima cement Heathens vs. Impis
The Heathens seem to have an easier run in this fixture against the students and hopefully reserve some energy for their week 16 clash against KOBS. The hosts seem to have finally gotten their rhythm and this not very good news for the Impis who managed to shock the warriors last weekend at the ‘graveyard’. But playing the relegation threatened teams at this time can never be an easy thing to any team. While the Heathens are fully aware that they cannot win the Premier 10 this time around they will want a more respectable finish than the current 4th position. This fixture should keep both sets of fans on their toes for a while.
Heathens
Rams vs. Hippos
This might turn out as the best clash of week 15 with both teams still firmly stuck in the relegation zone. Both teams on a good day are capable of upsetting each other. The rams will want to set the record straight against the rookies. The Hippos on the other hand seem to be enjoying mocking the other teams in the relegation slugfest with their brilliant backs play. With both teams expecting no favours from any team in this final bend, expect nothing apart from fireworks. Both teams will definitely treat this as a final.

Adrian Kasito: Player of the Month February 2018

The Rugby256 team unanimously voted Betway KOBS’ Adrian Kasito as its player of the month and by all accounts he deserved it. The Betway KOBS’ fullback has done well in fitting in the shoes of Joseph Aredo who now plies his trade at Kenya Harlequins. Adrian has been exceptional for his club and quite effective at both his attack and defensive plays.
Adrian Kasito dawning the Black, Yellow and Red at African 7s Championships 2017

Even moments when his team were down you always expect something out of the blue from this 22 year old soft spoken genius. Before he joined the mighty KOBS he honed his rugby skills at St. Mary’s College Kisubi and he is currently pursuing a Bachelors of Statistics at Makerere University.

He joined KOBS because he had many players to look up to there like Brian Odongo and Justin Kimono and he first enrolled for their development side Boks. In KOBS he has found a solid family with a very rich rugby history. He looks at his dad as a source of his unwavering inspiration. His stand out game in February according to him was against the warriors where he made few errors and got heavily involved in most of the team’s scores.
KOBS vs. Warriors

This ultimate team member is always talking about his team and not himself and he is grateful to having good mentors at his club and the Uganda Sevens’ team. He first came to the limelight in the National Colours in the 2016 Africa Sevens’ championship in Nairobi with some stunning performances which made any doubting Thomas’s to fervently seek repentance.

KOBS vs. Rams

Just to prove he is a gem in the team he had the last say during the 2017 Africa Seven’s Championship in Kampala with the dying moments of the game against Zimbabwe in the final. Uganda was on the ropes and after some excellent team work he found himself in a fair gap and run on behalf of all Ugandans to score the winning try. He made Zimbabweans and Ugandans cry. Tears of disbelief and of joy.

His veteran team mate Victor Wadia noted that Adrian has ‘high command at the back, creates and scores the most important tries and he has good game reading abilities. He makes try saving tackles and has a crazy work rate’. Betway KOBS’ head coach Rony Lutakome adds; “His commitment levels are up there top shelf. He works out with Justin Kimono. He tackles like he has life insurance and very explosive on attack”. Rony rarely praises any player and he has no time for ‘weak’ chaps. Adrian is definitely not a ‘weak’ chap.

Adrian is in the lager squad for the Uganda Sevens’ team and he is humble enough to know that he has to work harder and smarter to make the team to the 2018 Hong Kong’s Seven’s qualifiers. He points out Uganda’s failure to make it as ‘core’ team in the HSBC World Series in 2017 as his lowest point. He clearly hates losing.

Adrian points out that his highest point has been getting the opportunity to play for the Uganda Sevens’ team and therefore representing millions of Ugandans. And that is also a big motivation.

Rugby256 wishes Adrian and Uganda Sevens’ all the best in their preparations to make it to the Hong Kong Sevens’ Commonwealth Games and the Sevens World Cup.

Congratulations Adrian.

The 2017/8 Nile Premiership: Week 14 Round Up.

Week 14 came and went and the punters’ advice was thrown to the wind in some of the fixtures. There was no change at the top 7 in the table standing but certainly something seismic happened at the bottom 3 with Impis shocking the warriors at the “Graveyard”.

The log leaders Pirates survived a Buffalo attack at their home base in the earlier kickoff at Legends and it was very obvious that they struggled largely due to a bigger number of players missing in their squad as compared to the Buffaloes due to the upped preps of the Uganda sevens’ team-who were camped in Jinja. Buffaloes went into halftime leading the ‘sea robbers’ and it took lots of a gut wrenching fight back to see Pirates emerge 15-11 winners.

The victory ensured Pirates goes into week 15and 16 still as log leaders and Buffaloes earned their 2nd consecutive losing bonus point. It was great defensive work from the Buffaloes which kept them in the game since they absorbed a lot of Pirates attacks later in the second half.

The second match at Legends was the game of the day and it was certainly difficult to point out who the winner will be in this Legends derby. Midweek, the Shell Rimula Rhinos had parted ways with Head coach Brian Makalama and KOBS have been looking sharper than most of their first leg performances. The Rhinos forwards dominated at the set pieces for most of the game and despite some daring runs from Justin Kimono for the Betway KOBS on the wing, they came short.

Towards the end of the first half, Rhinos lock Robert Aziku earned his second yellow card for a ‘dangerous tackle’ and off he went for an early shower. This highly anticipated game unfortunately didn’t produce many fireworks probably because of the wet pitch and lots of unforced handling errors from both sides. The lone try came earlier from Aziku from a charged down kick.

Players seem to have had personal issues to sort out among themselves. Now with the benefit of the hindsight probably Justin Kimono would have been moved to 13 since he was attracting lots of attention from the Rhinos defence and was getting very slow ball. It was sad watching him stretchered away later. The Betway KOBS failed to get a losing bonus point and hence remain with 54 points while the Rhinos sneak on them with 52 points.

The Impis provided their fans with something to celebrate. Their 15-06 victory over the Warriors could be a pointer towards better days or perhaps a problem at Warrior’s camp. Going into this fixture, Impis were placed 10 and Warriors at 9. Impis denied Warriors the crucial losing bonus point. Impis leapfrogged the Warriors and Rams into 8th position. Warriors find themselves in very unfamiliar territory and to compound matters for them they will be playing the Pirates next week.

The defending champions Hima cement Heathens retained their 4th place position after a scrappy 15-03 victory over 9th placed Rams at Kyadondo. Many of the known Heathens’ fans were busy watching the game (KOBS vs Rhinos) at Legends and I think they could be a bit unhappy with the failure to get a bonus point. Heathens move onto 46 points as Rams retain their 10 points on the log.

The Hippos played hosts to Mongers and this was certainly going to be cracker. I had earlier failed to make a clear prediction on this fixture. Hippos had looked so clinical in week 13 and Mongers are not well known travelers and especially with their 2 good players facing suspensions. Well Mongers got out the game unscathed and won 27-19 in Jinja. Mongers now have 41 points and the Hippos stay 7th on the log with 14 points.

Summary of the current Premier 10 log

1.       Pirates                                                  60 points

USA Rugby Sevens Las Vegas

Rugby Sevens Las Vegas.
For all those who watch International Rugby 7s, don’t forget to watch the 4th stop of the 2017-2018 HSBC Sevens World Series, Las Vegas Rugby 7s. With the Rugby World Cup 7s coming up in San Francisco in July, you definitely want to see what our Rugby Cranes will be up against in a few months.

The world’s best rugby players are out in Las Vegas for three days, where 16 countries will grind out 45 matches as they compete for world supremacy. Last Year was mind-blowingly epic that there is no way anyone should miss watching it this year.

Pools for Las Vegas Rugby Sevens

After this competition the 14 sides in the top tier Rugby 7s circuit will know exactly how they will be seeded in the groups for the World Cup. These sides include South Africa, England, Fiji, New Zealand, USA, Australia, Scotland, Canada, Argentina, Wales, France, Kenya, Samoa and Russia.

So the battle is on this weekend to accumulate points in order to secure the desired spot in the groups for the World Cup. Unlike other sports where seeding is random, Rugby is different. You earn exactly which group you would like to be seeded into for the World Cup 7s based on how well you perform in the first Seven Rugby Circuits during the qualifying year. These Circuits include; Dubai, Capetown, Sydney, Hamilton, Vegas, Vancouver, Hong Kong.

How World Cup Rugby 7s seeding works?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhXWMIvFKBY

Because of this, it is essential for true 7s fans to watch the tournament this weekend because even with Vancouver 7s two weeks away, we can already tell how the ranking in points for the top tier sides will be for the most part after the Vegas 7s.

We can then anticipate the Hong Kong 7s tournament to seed the last 10 sides for the world cup. These sides include; Hong Kong, Ireland, Jamaica, Japan, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands, Uruguay, Chile.

This tournament is being held in Las Vegas which is about a 2 hour flight away from San Francisco. We will we be seeing the level of Rugby we should expect in San Francisco. For a side going to face some of the biggest teams in the world competing at the highest level, we don't want to be caught off guard by the pace and quality of Rugby the top tier teams exhibit every year in Las Vegas. Watching the players playing in Las Vegas and the way they are able to play two fast paced games daily in extreme heat and still perform at their best will help our side better prepare to face them in a city not too far from them but with a more mild climate on the West Coast of the United States.

San Francisco Rugby World Cup 7s
2018, will be the first year that USA hosts the Rugby World Cup 7s and with the trajectory their side has been on, we can only expect an exceptional display by the home side come July.

Do not forget to buy your tickets for Rugby World Cup Sevens in July, we hope to see a lot of the Ugandan Fans at the AT&T stadium supporting our national side as it showcases on the world stage.

The 2017/18 Nile Premiership: Week 14 Preview

This week will be the first of 5 weeks of the competition where all the Uganda Rugby 7s team call ups will not participate due to the upped preparations for the 2018 Hong Kong World Series qualifiers to be held in early April. Teams have been forced to turn and twist their squads to fill the voids created.

KOBS vs. Rhinos
The Shell Rimula Rhinos have parted ways with Head Coach Brian Makalama due to some yet released reasons. Mathias Ochwo and John Musoke will stand in for now. Both Mathias and John are former Rugby Cranes Captains and they have a huge task ahead of them to get the players composed and focused on the job at hand. Because unfortunately, they will be facing KOBS this weekend. And at this moment this is a make of break game. This 4.30pm fixture is the biggest game this weekend because each side has a lot to lose if they walk away with a loss. Neither side will be holding back in this encounter.
Team Rhinos
In the first leg match the Rhinos shockingly lost 17-31 to the KOBS. Shocking because of the margin and the firepower within the Rhinos camp as compared then to KOBS’. KOBS currently in 2nd position with 54 points will want to get this done with quickly as they prepare for the Mongers next weekend and the old rival Hima Cement Heathens in week 16 of the competition. In order for KOBS to remain in the title race they will need a victory. Rhinos on the other hand will want to win it to boost their chances of finishing higher than 3rd position.

KOBS vs Rhinos

It has been often spoken openly earlier in the competition that the team which dominates the Legends’ derbies will fly with the overall trophy and that will again be put to the test today. The Rhinos at 3rd position on the log with 48 points will need to solidly unite for a seemingly well rejuvenated KOBS side which will be hoping that the recovery of the Rugby Cranes’ Captain Brian Odongo will continue unabated.

But we cant forget, both sides greatly contribute to the Rugby Cranes 7s team, so whichever side was better prepared for the absence of those players might win this one.

Pirates vs. Buffaloes
Earlier at the same grounds, the log leaders- Pirates will entertain 6th placed Toyota Buffaloes at 2.30pm. This will be another interesting match-up due to their similar brand of expansive plays. The Buffaloes bravely fought last weekend against the KOBS but came short.

Pirates vs Buffaloes

The Pirates so far seem untouchable with last weekend’s humbling of the Mongers in their backyard. The main area of interest will be how they will manage without their 6 starters who are now with the Uganda Seven’s team. Pirates have the lion’s share of the squad and it will be good to see how others step up. Buffaloes will miss the services of Eric Kasita-the Uganda Sevens’ captain.

Pirates is not the same team it was even last season. There is a flexibility and versatility that it possesses that might work in their favor this weekend if they manage to get past the Buffaloes. Missing 6 starters might be the least of their worries. However Buffaloes might capitalize on this to surprise Pirates and shock them. Last weekend it was Warriors that was hit with a curve-ball, who is to say this weekend it wont be Pirates.

KOBS vs. Rhinos
Heathens vs. Rams
The Heathens will be out to solidify their 4 placing on the log and they will want to secure an early bonus point against 8th placed Rams at home. The Heathens will want to end the season on a high note as reflected by their outstanding victory over the Rhinos last weekend.
Team Heathens

Hippos vs. Mongers
The Hippos shock win last weekend against the warriors will hopefully boost the home fans as they host Mongers. The Hippos at home are now a serious team and it will be foolhardy for the mongers to approach this fixture lightly. It is anybody’s game.

Warriors vs. Impis
Warriors desperate to make amends for last week`s shock 10-30 loss to newcomers hippos will hopefully push to earn a bonus point in this fixture. Impis provides the best stage for Warriors to bounce back and get away from the relegation zone.

Week 14 will see all try to garner as much points as possible as teams try to take advantage of the missing Uganda Sevens’ players. May the best teams win their encounters and may the fans also turn up in bigger numbers to support them.

The 2017/8 Nile Rugby Premiership: Week 13 Round up

If there was ever a weekend to watch Rugby, this past weekend was definitely one not to miss out on. Shocker after shocker, the 2017-2018 Premiership lived up to what we already knew it to be, the most entertaining, competitive and shocking season in a long time. The big weekend came and went with celebrations and tears in equal measure.

Hippos Shock Warriors; Never underestimate the power of the underdog.
The Hippos attacked the Warriors mercilessly at Legends and managed to get a very popular win and a bonus point to boot. Not many teams can currently beat Warriors 30 points to 10 at their base and that is exactly what the rookies did. They even upset our earlier prediction of a warriors’ “sure win”. This game could easily have been the biggest shock at Legends this weekend. No one saw this upset coming. Jinja had just faced KOBS two days before, no one could have expected them to have enough gas left in the tank to upset the Warriors at home and earn a bonus point while at it. Congratulations to the Jinja Hippos. The Hippos move up to 7th leapfrogging the Warriors who are currently at 8th position.*

Heathens Halts a Rhino Charge.
As if Legends was jinxed on week 13 (that number again), Hima Cement Heathens turned up and took the Rhinos side to school. The hosts’ lost 15 -23 and the visitors had the game pretty much wrapped up early in the second half with Rhinos still scoreless. The Rhinos loss was painful and probably ends the Club’s maiden Premiership trophy. Emphasis on the word, "Probably". This season has proved to be extremely unpredictable we can't count Rhinos out of the title race yet.
The Rhinos first half performance was completely different from the last game when they humbled Mongers in Entebbe. The players took complete charge in the opening 10 minutes and missed two ‘certain’ opportunities to score tries and to add salt to the wound, a skewed Penalty from the sure boot of Kevin Makmot. Talk about a jinxed week for the Rhinos. Once the Heathens were allowed to settle in the game they didn’t hesitate to put points on the board via Lawrence Ssebuliba’s brace.
The Heathens defensive play was to be commended since they managed to repel several attacks from the Rhinos in the latter’s attempt to grasp a win at all costs. The biggest problem the Rhinos had on the day was at the Line outs. By the end of the first half they had lost a total of 6 of their throws and that is inexcusable at this level especially with eyes on winning the title. East and Central Africa’s best Line out jumper Mathias Ochwo did not play after sustaining a toe injury from the previous weekend at the “House of Pain”.
Rhinos remain at 3rd position with 48 points and the Heathens remain 4th with 41 points. Next weekend will be a big game for the Rhinos as they play 2nd placed KOBS at Legends. This week was tough for them and they will need to definitely regroup as they gear up to face one of their biggest rivals, KOBS. It will be all or nothing in this game. If Rhinos still wants a shot at this title, they will have to bring their all against the KOBS.

KOBS Pile Up Crucial Points
The KOBS won 19-12 against Buffaloes at the Kyadondo grounds. This fixture was always going to be very slippery to either team and Buffaloes didn’t go down without a decent fight and hence got a losing bonus point. The Buffaloes are going through a tough phase of the competition. No club wishes to face off against Heathens, KOBS, Pirates and Rhinos in 4 consecutive weekends. But this team stood up and faced the challenge pretty decently.
The highlight of this game was the return of Rugby Cranes Captain Brian Odongo. The return of Captain Fantastic couldn't have come at a better time. KOBS was at a time when it needed true leadership and as always Captain Fantastic came to the rescue. With his usual command on the field, the team came together for this game and snatched a victory from Buffaloes in what was a pretty close game. Brian managed about 55 minutes in total on the field and his club coach Ronnie Lutakome hopes to see him playing longer as they the Premiership comes to an interesting last bend. With Brian back on the field we hope this is a sign that Ex KOBS Captain Oscar Kalyango will be back on the field soon too. KOBS remain 2nd on the log with 54 points and Buffaloes remain 6th with 32 points.

Graveyard derby
The Rams won this relegation slug-fest between the 2 bottom placed sides before the game. The 18-13 scoreline is what many neutral expected. Rams had one try from Costa and another from Trevor as well as one conversion and 3 penalties from Nelly. Impis had a penalty try from Daniel Ortega, then 3 penalties from Henry Nsekuye. The game could have gone either way. The result has left the Impis starring closely to relegation from the Premiership.

“House of Pain”?
The Mongers run to an early lead in the first half leading 10-07 at the “House of pain” after 40 minutes. The game was prematurely ended by referee Charles Mungoma after some crowd trouble and an alleged attack on a match official with the “Sea robbers” winning with a total of 45 points against the hosts’ 10 points.
The Pirates did what no other team has managed in a long time-get a bonus point in Entebbe- and therefore helped to solidify their position at the helm with now 56 points. Mongers are still in the 5th position with 37 points.
We should strongly condemn the insults (verbal and physical) directed to all our match officials. Intimidation of the Match Officials is rather primitive and clearly for other sports and not rugby. We hope to hear more from the league management committee or the Uganda Rugby Union on this matter.

This was the weekend of Super Rugby. It was the weekend to show up and make the play that could have changed the trajectory of each team's season campaign. Pirates, KOBS, Heathens and Jinja took advantage of the Week 13 madness and made some astonishing plays that definitely had all the entire Rugby Fraternity in shock.
Non one could have predicted the way this season is unfolding. So many surprises no one can predict the winner of this season. After this weekend, "Anything can happen,"  should be the new season slogan because if there is anything we have learned from this week, it is that no one safe.
WHAT A GREAT WEEK 13! JUST WHAT WE ALL NEEDED.

The 2017/18 Nile Rugby Premiership; A review of Week 13

Herbert Wafula

After the mid week clash between Betway KOBS and the Hippos the log now looks neater with all teams having so far played 12 games apiece. This was the earlier match which was postponed due to the Hippos failure to travel to Legends. The KOBS won 45 to 14 points and managed to leapfrog Rhinos into 2nd position.

Week 13 is one of my favorite weeks in this campaign with almost all games having a fair sense of balance and honestly results can go either way in each of the 5 games being played out at 4 different venues today. Number 13 is regarded as bad omen for many but trust me this will be the farthest thing all the players assembled to do their duty among all the 10 clubs.

Team Plascon Mongers
My top of the clash encounter has the 5th placed Entebbe Mongers hosting the log leaders Pirates. This clash in the first leg was controversially awarded to the Mongers in a boardroom decision. That game marks the Pirates only loss so far. The Mongers will be out to prove a point and being at home they are never an easy team. The Pirates version of very wide plays will be greatly tested in the narrower Mongers pitch. For the chasing pack-KOBS and Rhinos-they will be hoping for a Mongers win.

At Kyadondo Rugby Club, the Toyota Buffaloes will host the Betway KOBS. The Buffaloes having been buoyed with a double victory over their elders’ Heathens will want to cause an upset in this one too. The KOBS lying in 2nd position with 51 points will step on the pitch knowing they cannot afford any slip. Buffaloes are currently in 6th position with 31 points. The query here is if KOBS will be well rested after the Wednesday game against Hippos.

KOBS vs. Buffaloes

The Shell Rimula Rhinos will host the defending Champions Hima Cement Heathens at Legends Rugby Club. Rhinos are currently in 3rd position with 48 points and 4th placed Heathens with 37 points. The Rhinos won the first leg clash at Kyadondo. The Heathens are undergoing a rebuilding phase and will need to pull some magical trick to upset the Rhinos who are also still in the title chase. The Heathens will be seeking to stem their dramatic drop from the helm.

Hima Heathens vs. Rhinoes (Cox Muhirwa and Asumen Mugerwa)
The Warriors host the Hippos at Legends at 14:30 hours. Both teams are tied with 9 points and if I was the betting type; probably this is the match I would most confidently state that there is a clear winner in Warriors. Two road trips in a week for the hippos might prove a bit too much for the Premiership rookies.

At the Makerere grounds’ graveyard the Rams are hosting the Impis. Both teams are tied with 6 points each. The slugfest in the relegation zone is equally not for the faint hearted and honestly this game can go either way. This derby will be very interesting since both teams use the same pitch for training and know each other too well.

May the most deserving teams win their clashes and may fans turn up in big numbers and support their favorite teams.

The 2017/18 Nile Rugby Premiership; Season Review

By Herbert Wafula.
This particular season promised to be the most entertaining so far and it has truly lived to my expectations thus far amidst some shocking results. We have never witnessed this kind of competitiveness among the top teams.
Mr. Daniel Kaggwa, The Legends Bar and Restaurant proprietor and a former Rhinos player told me at the beginning of the Premiership that the top 3 teams will all come from Legends. Seeing the Hima Cement Heathens-the defending champions-collapse last weekend to Buffaloes for the second time this year has almost confirmed his words. A few weeks ago it looked like a 4 horse race but currently that has been reduced to three.

 Heathens’ Dynasty Crumbled
Heathens have so far lost 5 games in total against Buffaloes (twice), Pirates (twice) and once to Rhinos. They have 2 other tough fixtures at Legends against the Rimula Rhinos this coming Saturday and later against their biggest known rival, Betway KOBS. This has been so far the worst title defense and there are yet a handful of games remaining.
Hima Cement Heathens
They are certainly going through a tough rebuilding phase. I watched their Friday failed attempt to get one past their ‘little brothers’, the Buffaloes but despite their best effort they were found wanting in many aspects even in the set pieces. Buffaloes ensured that Heathens got scrappy balls from the Scrums and Line outs.
In all truth any team which can lose two of their biggest guns in the model of Asuman Mugerwa and Phillip Wokorach will have to struggle greatly to remain competitive.

Betway KOBS
The KOBS played their postponed match against the Hippos on Wednesday at Namilyango College and it was good game that saw Betway KOBS come out on top 45 - 14. We hoped to see former Captain Oscar Kalyango in this fixture but I guess we will have to wait just a little longer for the influential Ex Captain to return.

The Betway KOBS have struggled this year and the fact that that they led for most of the first leg is more to do with attitude and not with having better skills. The team also lost Joseph Aredo to Kenya Harlequins and Uganda Cranes Captain Brian Odongo to a nasty knee injury. This might be a great time for Oscar to return onto the field.

The Pirates
To many neutral observers the Premiership seems headed to a new home and the clash between the Pirates and Rhinos might be the cherry on the cake this season. The Pirates are yet to lose any game on their pitch this season. The only loss was a board room decision which has not gone down well with many observers-more especially after the KOBS were allowed a rematch against Jinja Hippos.

Pirates vs. Buffaloes
The Pirates side boasts of the best back row and half back combo in the competition in Isaac Rujumba, Musa Muwonge and Desire Ayera. The work rate of this trio is awesome. The long tested combo of Conrad Wanyama and Ivan Magomu has done enough damage to other team’s fortunes that no team complained of poor officiating while losing to them.

Shell Rimula Rhinos

The biggest and ‘baddest’ forwards are chilling at the Rhinos base and it will be interesting to see how far they have improved since the 1st part of the league when they ‘miraculously’ lost to Pirates and KOBS.
Seeing them going about the resurgence in the 2nd half against the Mongers at the house of pain was a scene you see once in a while and that probably that has been their best game so far.

The 2017/18 Nile Premiership champion will for surely be decided at Legends Bar and Restaurant this season. Any loss to the top 4 teams will be catastrophic in the team’s top honors this season. May the most deserving team win it with great aplomb .

Timothy Kisiga Player of the month January 2018

With what is now looking like a  Black Pirates dominated season, Rugby 256 player of the month for January is Timothy Kisiga, a very instrumental member of this nuanced team of the Black Pirates. Black Pirates have been known to be the team that feels like home, for a lot of players and it is not any different for Timothy Kisiga.

Timothy had a pretty strong foundation in the sport of rugby with a solid school rugby career to back this up. However his professional career in the league is definitely a testament to the growth and developmental curve he has fostered at his time at Black Pirates.

The very mundane but rare quality that Timothy possesses, is he honestly enjoys playing Rugby. He might have exceptional rugby skills but he never forgets to enjoy himself on the field and that to a great extent contributes to his success on the field.

Just like Phillip Wokorach brings his own style to the position of full back, Timothy brings his own unique taste and elegance to full back.

What changed for you in terms of Rugby that made the difference in the way you play?
Definitely the gym, I have been on a strength and conditioning program that has helped me avoid contact injuries

What would you consider your best game this season so far?
The game against Buffaloes, first time I scored more than two tries in a game

What should we expect from you going forward?
I hope to consolidate my good performances and achieve consistency

Anything for the fans?
Hope they continue watching and appreciating good rugby

How tries do u have?
I have 9 tries so far this season

Best try so far?
This season, it was against Buffaloes

Congratulations to Timothy Kisiga. Your exceptional displays, dominance and influence on the field and in the sport of Rugby as a whole is the reason we at Rugby 256 chose you as our Player of the Month of January. We look forward to watching more and more of you on the field as you continue to make history playing the game you love and are very passionate about.
When it comes down to it, those that love and are passionate about the sport, are those who live to have long and fulfilled careers in Rugby. This can clearly be seen in Timothy and for us, this current season is a scratch on the surface of what he can offer as a player.
